E-voting in Norway - from the number field sieve to the usability lab
Abstract: Norway conducted trials of internet voting during local and parliamentary elections in 2011 and 2013, and during a series of local referenda in 2016. We discuss the design and analysis of the cryptographic voting protocol used in these trials, covering the security goals, the analysis of underlying mathematical problems, the proof of security and whether voters are able to use the system correctly. We also discuss how a bug in the deployed system almost put thousands of ballots on the internet in cleartext.
