This long-running collaboration focuses on symplectic integration of geophysical fluid dynamics, such as flows in the atmosphere and ocean. These flows are the core dynamic processes influencing Weather and Climate.
Using techniques collectively known as "Geometric Numerical Integration" we go further than developing numerical methods that are convergent in the limit of small discretization parameters. Rather, we develop methods that are themselves discrete analogs of the continuous flows, for finite values of the parameters.
Our techniques are related to methods used in Molecular Dynamics, a field with some interesting similarities to GFD.
